Philosophy of Education

Course Title

Philosophy of Education

Description

In this course, we will study foundational texts in the history of philosophy in order to become philosophers of education ourselves. We will read works by Plato, Rousseau, Dewey, Freire, and hooks inter alia, asking questions about human nature, the aims and means of education, and how educational models both reflect and transform society. Finally, we will develop our own pedagogical stances, answering for ourselves the key questions of the course. What are the aims of an education? How do we go about achieving those aims? In particular, (to speak directly to our place in a liberal arts college), what is the value of studying the humanities, the arts, and sciences, both historically and today?
